Monroe Safety Ambassador, Mark Winterbottom,
wrapped up the 2015 V8 Supercars
Championship with one race to spare at the
Coates Hire Sydney 500 season finale on the
streets of Sydney Olympic Park in December.
“I'm speechless to be honest, it hasn't really sunk
in,” Mark Winterbottom said.
“Everything that you've ever raced to get here has
been an achievement, whether it was karting to
get into the category and then the V8
Development Series (championship) and then
Bathurst as well.
“To win this, I've been trying for so many years
and I've stayed at the one team for such a long
time as well. To do it and to see the crew's
reaction when you come in, it's years of work to do
it and it makes you respect people like Jamie
(Whincup) more who has won six. The week and
the drama is just crazy and to win one is fantastic.
“It's awesome to be part of V8 Supercars history.
It's nice to be rewarded for the year that the team
Without the burden of the drivers’ championship
to worry about, Winterbottom cruised to fourth
place in Sunday’s 250km race, after which he
finally lifted the coveted champion’s trophy.
“It's probably the first time in three months that
I've actually been able to enjoy racing again
without mathematically trying to do the best
scenario and stuff,” Winterbottom said.
“I bent the bonnet. The guys had a lot of pride in
that bonnet and I've smashed it! It was a lot of fun
that race. I lost a bit in the pitstop and stuff, but
at the end it was actually quite good.
“It was nice to finish the year on a track that is
similar to where we will start next year as well. It
was a good weekend but today was just awesome.
The morale of the team as well was really cool.”
Winterbottom’s season included nine race
victories, including leading home a Prodrive
Racing Australia one-two in the prestigious Wilson
Security Sandown 500 endurance race and an
event sweep at the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400
street circuit. All in all, the driver known as Frosty
raced to 16 podium finishes from the 36 races of
the 2015 season.
Fittingly, the Western Sydney native clinched the
title on his home turf and with a podium.
“We’ve fought a long time for this, I’ve been at
the team a long time,” he said.
Winterbottom joined the factory Ford team in
2006 and has recorded top five championship
finishes in each season since, including five third
places, one runner-up finish and now a drivers’
