SUPERFORMANCE TRUCK ENTERS
Project car and engine specialists go the extra mile to take on all comers
Superformance has built a C10 Chevy pick-up
truck to compete in a television showdown.
The Queensland-based business took 98 days and
2680 man-hours to complete the awesome
machine, which took on a number of other
entrants in a drag racing contest at Melbourne’s
Calder Park Raceway. The contest was aired on
Rides Downunder Workshop Wars.
A National TV Show on Channel Ten, Rides
Downunder Workshop Wars is a television series
that encapsulates every aspect of performance
The Show, which challenges workshops around
Australia to build the ultimate street machine, is
only open to premium builders who are featured
on the show by invitation only.
“As one of Australia’s premium Builders, we were
excited to participate in the competition,”
Superformance Principal, Grant Malseed, said.
The C10 was originally Grant’s daily driver and is
now known around the world on the custom car
The engine was completely built in-house and
started life as a 400ci based Small Block
Chevrolet. The engine base is a Dart M Block that
now boasts 406ci, making greater than 700
Engine HP on 98 Pump Fuel with a Street tune.
It has a Scat forged rotating assembly, JE pistons
and rings, AFR cylinder heads, a BDS Billet 871
supercharger, and a BDS custom 16 injector EFI
hat. The C10’s transmission is a custom-built
T400 with a 4500-RPM stall converter, while the
chassis was CAD designed and custom built in
The pick-up features airbag suspension on all
corners, coil over shocks, a Panhard Bar, and
Wilwood brakes. The beast is fitted with dual air
compressors, dual batteries and a drop fuel tank,
which are all mounted on the chassis.

Superformance was founded in 1979 when two
families got together to start a business supplying
V8 parts to the Australian market. High
performance was the basis of the business,
consisting mainly of V8 engine parts, manual and
auto gearboxes, nine-inch Ford differentials, and
sales of performance related accessories.
Following the sale of the business to Grant in
2005, it has been on a dramatic growth curve.
Upon taking ownership, Grant built a new project
car building workshop, modernised the showroom
and developed an eCommerce store. American
Vehicles are now wrecked off site as
Superformance has outgrown its original facility
and on-site, alongside the showroom the business
also now has a custom paint and panel shop and
a mechanical shop. Staff numbers doubled in the
first year and have continued to grow ever since
while parts are now sent throughout South East
Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Superformance’s focus is on car building,
restoration and performance upgrades. These are
areas the management of the business expect to
remain in high demand well into the future.
The previous focus on Parts continues with a
strong future focus on growing the supply of parts
from premium manufacturers.
Grant claims that Superfomance’s competitive
advantage is its focus on quality workmanship
with superior technical ability along with a
commitment to building quality performance cars
and having one of the best-equipped workshops
Grant said he sees Superformance’s future
challenges as government red tape, with differing
state automotive legislation and with State and
Federal Government “having no understanding of
how many people and how much money
enthusiasts put into the community.”
“The media are not interested in promoting the
real car people; only the hoons, which I believe
are a minute number of the overall performance
car enthusiasts,” he said of the industry’s public
Grant is convinced that Superformance is on track
to be in the top tier of car builders worldwide and
says he is determined to stay focused to achieve
