STEVEN SMOLKOWICZ CROWNED SNAP-ON
TOOLS APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2012
Mr Smolkowicz officially earned the title of Australia and New
Zealand's leading automotive apprentice for his achievements during
his training and his contribution to the local community.
The 24-year-old from Western Sydney, who is also a fully qualified
shop-fitter and has just completed his automotive apprenticeship, is
no stranger to the spotlight, having already been awarded three
prestigious accolades in 2012 for his work during his training.
Mr Smolkowicz competed against six other talented apprentice
finalists from across the country to win the coveted title.
He takes home a prize package valued at more than $11,000'
including a Snap-on Tools product pack featuring all the essentials
and including a 54-inch Roll Cab, the major item that every mechanic

"You don't do this job in order to win awards, so it's a real honour
for me to gain this kind of recognition, especially from a well-respected
brand like Snap-on Tools," Mr Smolkowicz said.
"When I first found out I won, I just couldn't believe it.
"It's been a dream of mine for a long time and to have it realised
when there were so many other great candidates was a big surprise."
Mr Smolkowicz completed his shop-fitting apprenticeship four years
ago, but shortly after realised that he wanted to follow his heart and
pursue a career in the automotive industry.
So he started his automotive apprenticeship and despite knowing
it was the right thing to do, it was a huge challenge going back to first
"I'd always wanted to work with cars, but it just so happened that
I got offered a shop-fitting apprenticeship first," he said.
"After finishing my first apprenticeship I decided to make the move
and I'm glad I did, but my advice to young people would be to pick a
trade you love from the start and try to stick with it."
It's Mr Smolkowicz's dedication to his craft and his excellent work
ethic that has gained him recognition not only among his peers and his
teachers, but among industry insiders like Apprentice of the Year judge
and Snap-on Tools NSW Business Manager, Alan Moon.
"Steven is a very deserving candidate for this award," Mr Moon
"His academic performance, positive attitude and commitment to
his trade are second to none.
"While reading through his application, it became apparent that
we had an outstanding candidate who applied himself in every aspect
of his work.
"The standard of entries this year was very high, so he really is at
the top of his trade. It's a real credit to him."
Mr Smolkowicz's boss, Khalid Al-Ali, agreed saying he went above
and beyond his job description.
"He is always the first at work and the last to leave," Mr Al-Ali said.
"He sets a really good example for other apprentices and we are
very proud of him.
"We look forward to seeing him build a successful career."
Established four years ago as the joint brainchild of Snap-on Tools
Australia and popular car magazine Street Machine, Apprentice of the
Year attracts submissions from apprentices training to be a motor
mechanic, auto electrician, spray painter or panel beater from across
Australia and New Zealand.
