Patrick Thompson is a second year apprentice mechanic at the
Kmart Tyre & Auto Service store in Neutral Bay.
Working towards completion of his apprenticeship, the 23-year-old
said he faces many challenges in his daily role, but looks to the
knowledge of his team for support and assistance in skill development.
As a second year apprentice, Mr Thompson is responsible for a
range of activities at the workshop, including cleaning to general
maintenance, supplier management, customer service, road tests and
"While I find some tasks pretty easy, like replacing tyres and
repairing brakes, the biggest challenge I face is keeping up with the
more senior members of our team and sticking to set time-frames in
order to meet deadlines," he said.
"My team is very supportive, however.
"They assist me with time management and encourage me to take
on jobs outside my comfort zone."
Mr Thompson recognises that the experience gained from working

Peter Currie has got every reason to look confident as he is celebrating his first three years as the
Osborne Park ABS franchisee.
The business was established for some years when Mr Currie took the big step of leaving his
job as an experienced senior mechanic at a Holden dealership to running his own business.
"I did it for a better way of life," he said.
"I'd been a mechanic around here in various senior jobs and was getting nowhere really.
"I wanted to stop being an employee, have a good business of my own with a good reliable
income, and that's what I've achieved.
