Don't compromise belt tension on
Holden and Daewoo engines
Loosening the water pump before belt installation is vital to correct tension on
Holden and Daewoo 16v petrol engines.
Due to incorrect installation practices, the timing component kits used on
Holden and Daewoo engines are among the most common kits to encounter
premature system failure.
Through Gates field experience and failure analysis, it has been learned
that drive failure on Holden and Daewoo 16V engines can be avoided by
strictly following the correct installation procedure.
These failures are easily avoided by simply following the OEM
recommended installation procedure and being aware of the common
mistakes that are made which ultimately lead to expensive engine repairs.
Gates has found that drive failure is mainly caused by not rotating the
water pump to set the belt tension.
Although the drive is equipped with an 'automatic' tensioner, this still has
to be set up correctly.
This also requires manipulation
of the unconventional water pump,
located just below the tensioner.
Leaving the old tensioner on
without loosening the tensioner
bolt is not the correct procedure to
If the tensioner bolt is not
loosened, the pointer of the
tensioner will hit the cold stop
violently, which could seriously
damage the pointer, resulting in a
rupture later on.
Proceeding this way, in order to
be able to install the new belt, the
pointer of the tensioner has to be
When trying this with a
screwdriver, because of the high
spring tension you risk that the
screwdriver will slip off the pointer
which will again hit the cold stop.

In some cases the timing belt is installed on a hot engine.
It is clear this may lead to premature drive failure because tensioner set
up procedures have been developed for cold engines.
Gates strongly recommends replacing the tensioner and idler together with
the belt, as these parts are wear items so they must be replaced at regular

A worn bearing (loss of grease, seizure, misalignment etc.) is just as
concerning as a worn belt, and will lead to premature drive failure, resulting
in serious engine damage. In this case, loosening the water pump is vital in
order to reach the correct installation tension.

PlusQuip tools and equipment
Premier Auto Trade has announced the launch of the PlusQuip range of
specialised tools and equipment.
PlusQuip is a range of high quality workshop equipment suitable for
the testing, repairing and replacement of automotive engine
management and EFI components.
involved in the diagnosis and service of engine management systems.
PlusQuip products are workshop quality and all come with a 12
month warranty and technical support.
The PlusQuip offering includes fuel injector and fuel line repair kits,
ODB11 code reader and black box recorder, terminal release and test
lead sets, fuel pressure and flow test kits, multimeter and infrared
thermometer kit, coil-over plug and KV testers and an oxygen sensor
An ABS wheel speed sensor tester that can reduce your ABS sensor
diagnostic time to minutes is also included in the range.
The common rail diesel injector return flow tester is a professional
kit that is used to compare diesel fuel return on a common rail diesel
system between each individual injector, monitoring up to six injector
flows during each test sequence.
This industry standard test requires the removal of the return flow
pipes only, negating the potentially hazardous task of accessing the high
pressure line, and fitting the specific test lines with adaptors to the
injectors requiring testing.
This can quickly determine if an injector is functioning correctly and
the kit is suitable for many systems including Bosch, Denso, Delphi,
A relay bypass switch master kit is also included in the range,
allowing time saving troubleshooting of fuel pumps or any other
automotive relay circuits.
The relay bypass switch plugs in place of the relay, providing direct
control over that circuit.
The kit includes six switches for the most commonly used automotive
relays and can be used to activate the fuel pump when the engine is not
running to allow the fuel pressure or other electrical circuits to be tested,
along with headlight circuits, air conditioning or thermo fans and more.
If you are a technician involved in EFI and engine management then
the PlusQuip product range is for you.
PlusQuip is available through specialised automotive resellers and
leading automotive retailers.
