Putting the brakes on
Consumer insights reveal that the key
results customers want when their vehicle is
having new brake pads fitted are clean
wheels, quiet braking and safety and
Motospecs Global Brands Manager,
Richard Smith, said choosing the right pad
can help ensure your customers are not only
happy and safe, but keep coming back to your
Modern vehicles feature highly complex
braking systems so it's important to choose a
brake pad that has been designed to fit with
the latest in braking technology.
"Brake pads for modern vehicles have
advanced from the days when most pads on
the market were semi-metallic," Mr
"Although semi metallic
pads are still available,
they are a second class
choice, as they work by
grinding away at the rotors, and cause
both excessive dust and wear.
"More recently, ceramic brake pads
are becoming the norm and are most
often used as Original Equipment
(OE) by vehicle manufacturers.
"Ceramic pads such as Ferodo
ThermoQuiet produce maximum
stopping power while being quiet and
producing minimal dust.
"Highly durable, Ferodo ThermoQuiets are
effective because they generate 'adhesive
friction' and adhere to the rotor as opposed to
Unique to Ferodo, Integrated Moulded
Insulator (IMI) technology is another
advancement to consider when choosing
Mr Smith said with IMI technology, the
friction material, backing plate and insulator
are integrated into a single, high-strength
"The brake pad material goes right through
to the backing plate, to where the pistons grab
hold of the calipers," he said.
"This ensures there is less opportunity for
vibration to occur, thus reducing the heat and
noise generated by braking.
"Laser Shaped Friction is another
technological innovation from Ferodo that
helps reduce vibration, heat and noise."
Choosing a ceramic pad such as Ferodo
ThermoQuiet and Ferodo Premier, which both
feature the latest in brake pad technology,
might seem an expensive option.
Yet when you consider that the life of a
ceramic brake pad is far longer than that of
cheaper pads, the cost difference is virtually
non-existent because a ceramic pad will need
to be replaced less frequently.
Always machine and bed in
Mr Smith said regardless of brand, it is
important to always machine or replace the
rotor when fitting a new brake pad for the
brake to bed into the rotor.
"Without machining to generate a smooth
surface on the brake disc, the chance of
vibration, noise, lack of performance and
excessive wear is greatly magnified as the pad
cannot 'mate' to the disc surface," he said.
"We find that pads that
have been fitted
or disc replacement are
generally the only pads that
manufacturers claim you don't need to
bed in brakes, but you should always do it to
ensure effective braking and long pad
"It's also important to always remind
customers to go easy on the brakes for the
first 200 kilometres or so."
Mr Smith said some brake pads require
shims on the backing plate to minimise noise
and heat transfer to the caliper.
"The caliper is often the culprit causing
noisy brakes," he said.
"The best brake pads today are designed
to eliminate the use of a shim.
"Both Ferodo ThermoQuiet and Ferodo
Premier do not require the use of a shim.
"Without a shim involved in the
replacement process, the fitment job is both
quicker and easier."
Ferodo caters for Australia's vehicle variety
Fitting an original equipment equivalent
pad will help guarantee optimal braking
performance and safeguard the lifespan of the
Ferodo Premier braking kits are original
equipment in eight out of 10 European
vehicles and meet the exacting R90 standards
that are required for autobahn driving.
In addition, the Ferodo Premier kits come
with all the brake wires and fitting accessories
as detailed by the vehicle manufacturer.
Mr Smith noted that many cars on
Australian roads were European made.
"This region has unique standards for
brake pads, with all brake pads being required
to meet R90 standards to cope with the extra
rigours of autobahn driving," he said.
"Choosing a pad that has been designed
for European vehicles means you can fit those
cars with pads that will complement the
vehicle's advanced braking system and
maintain both driveability and superior
Save your customers extra hassle down the
track by always checking the brake fluid when
you're replacing brake pads.
Select a brake fluid that has been
designed to complement the brake pad you're
"Ferodo offers a premium range of brake
fluids that have been designed to complement
the strong performance of Ferodo brake
pads," Mr Smith said.
Ferodo ThermoQuiet and Ferodo Premier
are top quality brake pads that incorporate the
latest in braking technology.
Used by car manufacturers around the
world, Ferodo pads are a top choice for
mechanics and workshops across Australia.

The genesis for Ferodo ThermoQuiet was
an issue that Ford was having with its F series
