“The CarSmart Workshop program is an online training tool that has
been specifically developed to help independent automotive workshops
increase productivity, raise customer service levels and as a result improve
profitability,” CarSmart Workshop marketing committee member, Ian Bott,
Launched to a receptive audience at the 2013 AAAA Expo in Sydney,
subscribers to the CarSmart Workshop are already reaping the rewards of
Currently subscribers to the CarSmart Workshop Program can access
four training modules covering topics such as Maximising Workshop
Profitability, Efficiency Tools and Optimising Service Method.
“Our plan has always been to deliver training that is relevant, engaging
and that owners can apply directly to the day-to-day running of their
workshop and see immediate improvements,” Mr Bott said.
“Initial feedback has been excellent and all reports we have received to
date indicate that we are well on the way to achieving these goals.”
One of the most valuable tools for subscribers to the CarSmart Workshop
program is the CarSmart Service Checklist. Available exclusively to
CarSmart Workshop members, this checklist is designed to assist workshop
managers streamline their workflow and assist customers understand the
value of the service that has been completed.
“As technicians become familiar with the service method laid down by
the Checklist, they will take less and less time to complete each service,”
said Mr Bott. “In some cases we are hearing reports that with having the
right efficiency tools available, technicians are completing services in less
than half the time.”
As a rule of thumb, workshops implementing the CarSmart Service
Checklist should target a 20 percent increase in efficiency. This means
that for the same number of technician hours workshops should be able to
book and sell 20 percent more retail hours.
“Just imagine what that does to the bottom line,” Mr Bott said.
In addition to improving productivity in the workshop, the CarSmart
Service Checklist also adds value to the service at the office when the
customer is paying.
“Since we started using the CarSmart Service Checklist, we have
definitely noticed we can now complete our services faster and more
thoroughly,” Kats Automotive Services owner, Terry Edgar, said.
“An added advantage is that our customers really value the detailed
service report that we provide to them highlighting all the work that has
been done in the workshop.
“As a result we have been able to increase our prices with no push back
from our customers,” he adds. “They rightly believe they are getting a
higher level of service and they are willing to pay more for it.”
The Checklist uses easy to understand colours to highlight the condition
of each item:
• Green - Checked and OK
• Yellow - Monitor and review
• Red - Requires urgent attention
“We have found the colour
coded system allows our
customers to quickly identify the
important information at a glance,
which gives us the opportunity to
discuss items that need immediate
attention. Of course this has allowed us more opportunities to upsell as
well, which again has improved the profitability of our business,” Mr Edgar
There is little doubt that for $129 (inc GST) an annual subscription to
the CarSmart Workshop program is great value for money.
Even more so when you consider that for a limited time new subscribers
will receive a ‘Welcome Pack’ valued at more than $129 from their choice
of one of the 12 brands who support this initiative.
